Concept Art Prettier Than The Films

We all know that Disney movies are gorgeous pieces of art. But some of these concept sketches put even the films to shame.

The Aristocats was released in 1970, but concept art like this was shown to Walt Disney as early as 1966.

Mary Blair is possibly the most prolific concept artist in Disney’s history, so it’s no wonder we’re featuring her art for Peter Pan and Cinderella:

Mary’s broad brush strokes and striking colors make her art memorable and immediately identifiable.

Some concept art is developed before the final story is even flushed out. We know Frozen went through a number of visual and story developments before becoming the tale of two sisters we ultimately saw on the screen. One of those ideas that never came to fruition was a sassy, face-grabbing Snow Queen inspired by Bette Midler, as seen in this concept art by Claire Keane.

These images of concept art for Disney’s The Princess and the Frog show that early on style, color and design were central to the film.

This image from a collection of concept art for Hercules, show a much darker version of a skeletal Hades.

Craig Mullins presented this romantic painting as part of his concepts for Tangled. It should definitely be hanging in an art gallery.

Meanwhile, Paul Felix presented us with these images for Tangled that we’re also in love with.

Lisa Keene developed this concept art for Enchanted, it’s artistic style would eventually directly inform the animated portions of the film.

Chris Sanders kept it simple with this watercolor sketch of Lilo from Lilo and Stitch.

Big Hero 6 was a big film with a very distinct and full look, it’s a good thing they had a concept artist like¬†Tadahiro Uesugi to help them visualize the world of Hiro and his friends.

The latest Disney animated movie was no different when it came to visual development and concept art, check out these piece by Ryan Lang featuring a hairless Maui and more.
