The Guardians we know and love today such as Rocket and Groot were not originally part of the team in the first appearance in 1969. we do however get a glimpse of them in the new movie which only super fans would have noticed. I sure didn’t until I did this article.
We talked briefly about these characters in our latest podcast review of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, so take a listen there if you have not already. Sometimes it’s nice to see actual images with the description, thus this article.
We’ll start with the character that has hints of Peter Quill. Vance Astro aka Major Victory is an astronaut from 20th century Earth who travels to Alpha Centauri in suspended animation for many years. He is a mutant who possesses the psionic ability of psychokinesis, which manifests into blasts of power that disrupts any living things’ mind.
Martinex T’Naga is a member of a genetically engineered offshoot of humanity whose traits were designed for survival under the cold conditions of the planet Pluto. He possesses enhanced strength, speed, and stamina, and superhuman durability. He can also shoot cold blasts from his left hand and heat blasts from his right hand. He is played by Michael Rosenbaum in the 2nd movie and looks pretty freaking cool.
Next up is Captain Charlie-27 who is a soldier and space militia pilot, genetically engineered to live in Jupiter’s gravity. He is a military man who has been trained well in hand to hand combat, can fly almost any aircraft, and has superhuman strength. His background story reminds me of Rocket Racoon. Genetically modified to be a weapon but not as cuddly nor a trash panda but a huge mammoth of a man.
You’ll recognize this next hero: Yondu Udonta. In the comics, Yondu is of the alien race called marsupials and an expert archer in which he uses a whistle with a range of four octaves to aid his archery. Now that sounds familiar! He is a natural mystic, like his entire Zatoan tribe and hunter. Yondu possesses an intuitive mystical “sixth sense” perception that permits him limited empathic relationships with other lifeforms. This could be a reason why he took Peter in after he found out what was happening to Ego’s other children.
The next three characters join up with the Guardians a short time later while fighting the war against the Badoon. The Ogord siblings are known as Starhawk (Stakar) and Aleta. Starhawk can manipulate light to create concussive force blasts of photonic energy, heat, and solid-light constructs. He can also fly at the speed of light by tapping anti-gravitons, and survive in the vacuum of space. By tapping into Aleta’s powers (when merged with her), he can also generate solid constructs of light. Aleta can focus photons into solid-light constructs (such as battering rams, bubbles, ramps, etc.). She can fly by standing on a disc of her solid light and mentally commanding it to rise upwards. Aleta has the ability to lift objects weighing up to 50 tons as well. Sylvester Stallone plays Stakar and Michelle Yeon plays Aleta in volume two as a Ravagers that have a connection to Yondu.
Last but not least of the Guardians after other teams are formed is Nikki Gold. Nikki of the planet Mercury. As such, she has the ability to see in intense light and has a high degree of resistance to heat and most types of radiation. She is self-taught from memory tapes in gymnastics and sharp-shooting. Nikki is usually equipped with a gun of some sort whether is be a stun gun or a laser pistol.
