What Live Action Films We Want To See Next – Pt. 1

You may have heard recently, that Disney is going ahead with at least 3 other live action versions of their animated classic. In the last couple of weeks, Lion King, Mulan and Aladdin have all been announced. We can’t wait to see these films, and more importantly who they cast!  In the meantime, we thought we’d offer up a few suggestions of other Disney classics we’d love to see made into live action films. Ashley and I both picked two films and I was tasked with coming up with my dream cast. Today we’ll take a look at our first two picks, Robin Hood and The Nightmare Before Christmas.

Robin Hood

David Oyelowo as Robin Hood

If you’re aware of David Oyelowo, you know that he can do everything from Shakespeare to action to comedy and back again. Who better to play our dashing hero returned from war? Oyelowo would lend depth and joviality  to the character of Robin that has been missing from past adaptations of the tale.

Hayley Atwell as Maid Marian

Hayley Atwell is a master of playing feminine, yet strong and capable characters. It would be great to see a Marian who could hold her own with the Merry Men of Sherwood Forest.

Ray Stevenson as Little John

You may know Ray Stevenson from his series Rome or his turn as the Punisher, but you only need to look to his portrayal of Volstagg in Thor to know he could easily slide into this role.

Johnathan Rhys Meyers as Prince John

If you’ve watched the Tudors, you know Jonathan Rhys Meyers would be a perfect fit for the spoiled and selfish Prince john. He could also bring an eccentricity to the character that could give him more dimension and interest.

Nick Offerman as Friar Tuck

If you question this choice, you are a fool.

Colin Salmon as The Sheriff of Nothingham

Colin Salmon would be a smart choice for the Sheriff. He could bring a more underhanded and subtle take on the performance of this character, providing opportunity for further intrigue and plot between himself and Prince John.

Richard Armitage as King Richard

Richard Armitage has some experience with the Robin Hood tale, having played Guy of Gisbourne in the BBC series. However, I would love the chance to see him in a more commanding and fatherly role to his people as King Richard. Like Thorin, without the mania.

nbc

The Nightmare Before Christmas

Eddie Redmayne as Jack Skellington

Having watched Eddie Remayne in several roles, I see him as the perfect Jack. He has the physicality of movement, ease of performance and the singing voice to pull it all together and present the ultimate live-action version of Halloween Town’s most promient resident.

Evan Rachel Wood as Sally

Evan Rachel Wood’s voice, style and poise mean she would be a shoe-in for the role of Sally. She also has a mysterious air that would lend itself well to the development of the character.

Robert Downey Jr as Oggie Boogie

I know, I know, but hear me out. RDJ has an amazing singing voice (youtube it!) and he could bring a jazzy and carefree attitude to the villain of Oogie Boogie. Can’t you just see him slinking around in the shadows of Halloween Town?

Stephen Fry as The Mayor

I dare you to find a person better suited to this role. The mayor is both happy and sad, in entertaining and dramatic measures. Stephen Fry could embody that, and also make it whip smart and surprising.

Caleb McLaughlin, Mille Bobby Brown and Dustin Matarazzo as Lock, Shock and Barrel

These kids are everywhere, having fun, being silly and singing. They could slide right into the role of Halloween’s most infamous trick-or-treaters.

David Bradley as The Professor

Finch in a wheelchair, enough said.

So what are your opinions on the casting? Would you have chosen differently? What films do you hope Disney announces as live-action features next?
